The Battle for Zimbabwe's Future: Mnangagwa's Quest for Power Extension
In a move that has sparked controversy and divided opinions, Zimbabwe's cabinet has approved a draft law that could extend President Mnangagwa's term in office beyond 2028. This ambitious plan, dubbed '2030 he will still be the leader', has been a topic of heated debate within the ruling party, Zanu-PF.
But here's where it gets interesting: Mnangagwa, once a trusted deputy to the late President Mugabe, found himself at odds with the former leader's growing political ambitions, particularly those of the then-first lady. Despite publicly rejecting the idea of an extended presidency, his supporters have been chanting the slogan '2030 he will still be the leader' at Zanu-PF rallies, arguing that he needs to remain in power to complete his 'Agenda 2030' development program.
Mnangagwa has faced fierce opposition within his own party, with one of his main critics, Blessed Geza, also known as 'Bombshell', passing away last week. Geza, a respected veteran of Zimbabwe's independence war and a member of Zanu-PF's central committee, launched a scathing attack on Mnangagwa's ambitions just a year ago. He apologized for his role in helping Mnangagwa come to power and accused the president of nepotism and corruption.
Zanu-PF expelled Geza for disloyalty, forcing him into hiding. Yet, he maintained a strong social media presence, regularly posting videos calling for protests. Hours before his death, a message on his social media pages urged Zimbabweans to continue the fight against Mnangagwa's rule and end the alleged plunder of the country's resources.
Geza's passing has not silenced the opposition. Andrease Ethan Mathibela, national chairman of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association, praised Geza for speaking out against corruption and nepotism, stating, "At a time when silence would have been easier, he chose to fight for the promise of independence."
The government, however, remains steadfast in its pursuit of the 2030 plan. They argue that the draft law aims to strengthen governance and bring political stability. But this interpretation is not universally accepted, and many see it as a power grab.
