Science fiction writers and Comic-Con bid farewell to AI
In recent months, the creative world has witnessed a growing resistance against generative AI, with prominent figures in science fiction and popular culture taking a stand. This movement is exemplified by the decisions made by San Diego Comic-Con and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA), as well as the music distribution platform Bandcamp's recent ban on AI-generated music.
The SFWA's Nebula Awards faced a heated debate when they initially announced updated rules in December. Works entirely created by large language models (LLMs) were disqualified, while authors using LLMs during the writing process had to disclose their usage. This sparked controversy, as some feared it opened the door to LLM-generated content. SFWA's Board of Directors promptly apologized, acknowledging their approach was flawed and causing distress.
The rules were revised again, now explicitly stating that works written, partially or wholly, by generative LLM tools are ineligible for Nebula Awards. Any work using LLMs at any stage in its creation will be disqualified. This change was welcomed by some, like Jason Sanford, who expressed his refusal to use gen AI in his fiction, citing both ethical concerns and the lack of creativity in AI-generated content.
Sanford raised important questions about the scope of LLM usage, especially with major corporations pushing these tools. He warned that writers using LLM-powered tools might be unfairly disqualified from awards or face backlash from readers and fellow writers. The debate continues as these communities strive to balance innovation and artistic integrity.
Comic-Con faced a similar controversy when artists noticed rules allowing AI-generated art at their convention's art show, but not for sale. After artists protested, the rules were amended to explicitly ban AI-created material. Comic-Con's apology was less publicized than SFWA's, but the art show head, Glen Wooten, justified the change, citing the previous rules' effectiveness as a deterrent.
As the year progresses, it's anticipated that more organizations will adopt strict stances against AI, leading to ongoing discussions within these creative communities. The debate surrounding AI's role in art and storytelling is far from over, leaving many questions to be answered and resolved.
