Victoria Mboko Eyes First WTA 500 Title After Easing Into Adelaide Final (2026)

In a remarkable display of talent and determination, Victoria Mboko, who was recently honored as the WTA Newcomer of the Year, has secured her place in the final of the Adelaide International. She achieved this impressive feat by decisively defeating Australian wild card Kimberly Birrell with a score of 6-2, 6-1. This victory not only highlights Mboko's exceptional ball-striking capabilities but also her resilience on the court, underscoring her potential to capture a coveted WTA 500 title.

Last year marked a significant turning point in Mboko's career as she clinched her first titles at both the WTA 250 and WTA 1000 events, culminating in her recognition as the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz Newcomer of the Year. As we step into the second week of the new year, she is poised to add a WTA 500 trophy to her growing collection.

In just under an hour—specifically, 59 minutes—Mboko showcased her skills by overpowering Birrell. After initially falling behind 2-1 in the first set, she quickly gathered momentum, embarking on a streak of nine consecutive games that left her opponent reeling. Throughout the match, Mboko delivered a stunning performance, hitting 22 winners, including eight aces, while breaking her opponent’s serve five times out of seven opportunities. Notably, she faced only one break point against her serve during the entire match, and that was when she already led 6-2, 4-1.

Reflecting on her journey through the tournament, Mboko credited her challenging early matches for preparing her for this decisive victory. She had to come back from a set down against Beatriz Haddad Maia in her opening round and saved match points against Anna Kalinskaya in the second round. "We had a lot of good exchange of rallies," she remarked, adding, "I feel like I was able to kind of stay in with her in terms of pace. We had a lot of rallies where we were running a lot and trying to stay neck and neck at the baseline."

She believes that these intense rallies will serve her well in future matches, saying, "I think having those kinds of rallies and points can help me when it comes to crucial moments in other games. Overall, it gives me a boost in confidence."

Looking ahead, Mboko's next challenge will be against the winner of the second semifinal match between former doubles partners Mirra Andreeva, who is seeded No. 3, and Diana Shnaider.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting tournament!
