He explained that this winter’s free-agent spree could be notably restrained. “When you talk to agents and teams, there’s going to be a much smaller amount of money spent this winter,” Olney said. “It feels like the big spenders aren’t jumping in.” He pointed to the Dodgers as likely to add bullpen help and shave edges, but not make a blockbuster splash. The Yankees, while pursuing Cody Bellinger, may refrain from committing to a $200 million megadeal.
That scenario could place the Blue Jays in a favorable position to add more talent. Olney described Toronto as “the richest team walking into a store” because they’re able to purchase multiple pieces without facing heavy competition from other top bidders.
Toronto has already made a significant offseason move by adding right-handed ace Dylan Cease on a seven-year, $210 million contract. They also signed pitcher Cody Ponce to a three-year, $30 million deal, and right-handed pitcher Shane Bieber chose to opt into a $16 million player option for 2026.
Olney highlighted the Jays’ interest in outfielder Kyle Tucker, suggesting a potential wait-for-the-domino effect. He explained that Tucker’s situation could hinge on Kyle Schwarber’s decision, which he called the market’s key pivot. If Schwarber returns to Philadelphia, fewer teams may pursue Tucker; if Schwarber signs elsewhere (for example, the Mets), that could free dollars and open doors for Tucker with different clubs.
If Schwarber lands elsewhere, Olney suggested the Blue Jays could be strong contenders for Tucker, assuming the market’s ceiling isn’t reserved for a handful of other players. He added that finding teams willing to commit $400 million to Tucker appears unlikely, which could further tilt the balance toward Toronto.
Tucker, a left-handed power bat, posted a line of .266/.377/.464 with 22 homers and 73 RBIs across 136 games for the Chicago Cubs last season, making him a prime target for a high-value deal.
Regarding Bo Bichette, Olney described his market as more limited, yet his hitting profile remains appealing to many teams. He noted that Bichette’s value is buoyed by his unique contact skills, and he named Detroit and Boston as potential suitors if he leaves the Blue Jays. He also emphasized that Schwarber’s decision could clarify the path for Bichette and Tucker.
Beyond the lineup, Toronto appears interested in strengthening the bullpen. Olney pointed to Robert Suárez as a potential fit, likely offering a more affordable option than Edwin Díaz, who Olney estimates could command $100 million or more. He mentioned the Dodgers and Padres as possible landing spots for Díaz, should a big payday be in reach.
