Terminator Genisys’ unfinished John Connor arc teased by Jason Clarke
Jason Clarke, who plays an adult John Connor in Terminator Genisys, discusses the film’s open threads and why this topic remains highly relevant a decade later. In an interview with CBR’s Joshua Patton, Clarke dives into his interpretation of John Connor, a version that positions the character as the movie’s ultimate antagonist and presents a seemingly flawless Terminator form. He reflects on the unanswered questions the film left behind and why those possibilities deserved a deeper dive.
When asked whether there were lingering questions from Terminator Genisys worth revisiting, Clarke lamented the lost path: “It’s a real pity. I wish there had been more of that storyline explored. I really do. I only began to scratch the surface, and the studio shuffled things in the editing room. It was a fascinating direction to pursue.”
Clarke added that the concept feels increasingly timely: “That story becomes more and more relevant today. It calls for a new, more focused treatment—smaller in scope but deeper in detail—especially given where robotics and AI stand right now.”
Terminator Genisys, directed by Alan Taylor from a screenplay by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier, arrived in 2015 with a markedly different take on the beloved saga. As a standalone entry, it freely altered portions of the established lore, beginning with Kyle Reese’s actions in a way that creates a paradox in time itself.
In this installment, Clarke’s John Connor coexists with Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, J. K. Simmons as San Francisco Police Detective O’Brien, Matt Smith as the advanced T-5000 operative known as Alex, and Arnold Schwarzenegger returning as the reprogrammed T-800 nicknamed Pops. The cast also features Dayo Okeniyi, Michael Gladis, Byung-Hun Lee, Sandrine Holt, and Courtney B. Vance in supporting roles.
Financially, Terminator Genisys grossed over $440 million against a production budget around $158 million, yet critical reception didn’t align with box office results. At the time of writing, it holds a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on reviews from critics, while audience response—tracked by the film’s Popcornmeter—sits at about 52% across more than 50,000 user reviews.
What’s Next for the Terminator Universe?
James Cameron, the franchise’s creator and former director, has confirmed that a new Terminator series is in development, though progress appears slow. When the project was announced in 2024, Cameron indicated that future installments would introduce fresh characters and storylines, noting that audiences may not be as invested in the lore as insiders assume.
As of September, Cameron acknowledged the uphill trek of developing the new series. He explained that drafting a fresh Terminator narrative is challenging: “I’m working on a new Terminator story, but I haven’t made much headway because I’m wary of a plot that could be eclipsed by real events. We’re living in a science fiction era right now.”
Terminator Genisys is available for streaming on Paramount+.
