Sydney Harbour Shark Attack: Police Warn Against Swimming After Heavy Rain Creates 'Perfect Storm'
A 12-year-old boy is fighting for his life after a shark attack in Sydney Harbour on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred while he was swimming with friends near Nielsen Park in Sydney's eastern suburbs.
NSW Police reported that the boy was jumping off a popular rock ledge around 4:20 p.m. when the attack took place. It is believed that a bull shark was responsible. The boy's friends, all of similar ages, acted bravely by rushing to his aid and one of them even jumped into the water to pull him to safety.
Superintendent Joe McNulty, the commander of NSW Police's Marine Area Command, praised the friends' quick response, stating that their actions were 'nothing but brave.' He also commended the emergency responders for their extraordinary efforts, describing the CPR performed by police officers as a 'textbook recovery' that gave the boy a fighting chance for survival.
A nearby police speedboat arrived within minutes, and an officer applied a double tourniquet to the boy's legs to stop the bleeding. The boy was then taken by boat to Rose Bay, where ambulance crews were waiting to rush him to the hospital. He remains in critical condition with injuries to both legs.
The Department of Primary Industries has not yet confirmed the species of shark involved, but police officials described it as a 'large' animal. McNulty highlighted the brackish nature of Sydney Harbour, which contains a mixture of salt and freshwater, leading to poor visibility.
Following a weekend of heavy rain, McNulty suggested that the water quality, combined with the splashing from people jumping into the water, may have created the 'perfect storm' environment for the shark attack. He advised against swimming in the area, emphasizing the current poor visibility due to the high freshwater content.
NSW SharkSmart confirmed that beaches near Nielsen Park, including Shark Bay Beach, remained closed after the incident. Insp. Giles Buchanan from NSW Ambulance praised the tourniquet application as a life-saving intervention, describing the initial response as a 'resuscitation situation' where the boy was unconscious upon arrival.
