In a surprising turn of events, the Cincinnati Reds have officially announced the designation of right-handed pitcher Yosver Zulueta for assignment. This move is primarily aimed at clearing a spot on the 40-man roster for fellow righty Pierce Johnson, whose recently reported one-year contract with the team has now been confirmed.
Standing at 6 feet 1 inch, Zulueta is known for his impressive fastball. Despite making a brief appearance in Major League Baseball over the last two seasons, he has only accumulated 22 and a third innings of play, during which he has struggled with a rather high earned run average of 5.32. However, not all is bleak; there are some positive signs in his performance metrics. Last season, Zulueta showcased his potential by averaging an astonishing 98.1 mph on his four-seam fastball. Impressively, he managed to strike out 24.8% of the batters he faced while also generating a solid ground ball rate of 54%.
Yet, it’s important to note that his overall effectiveness is somewhat undermined by a low swinging-strike rate of just 8.4% and a 25.4% chase rate from opposing hitters, which raise questions about his ability to sustain his strikeout numbers. Additionally, Zulueta has faced challenges with control, as evidenced by his walk rate of 10.9% among big league hitters.
