A Controversial Move: Extra Police Powers Ahead of Eastleigh vs Aldershot
Police have secured extended authority to manage potential trouble around a heated football clash between two rivals. A dispersal order lasting 26 hours will be active in Eastleigh from 10:00 GMT on Saturday, ahead of the FA Trophy match against Aldershot scheduled for 15:00.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary stated that officers will also hold the power to confiscate or compel the removal of face coverings or any items used to conceal identity.
The force indicated it had received information signaling possible youth-related violence among some attendees at the Silverlake Stadium.
The dispersal order authorizes police to direct a person to leave a defined area for a set period of time. Chief Inspector Hayley O’Grady added that officers will patrol the ground vicinity and the town center throughout the day.
She commented: “Anyone considering turning up on Saturday to cause trouble should think again and stay away, including those who are suspended from either club.”
“While we hope these extra powers won’t be needed, and that fans enjoy the match in an orderly fashion, we will respond swiftly and robustly where necessary.”
