With no end in sight, the Ontario Liberal Caucus is calling for a public inquiry to shed light on this ongoing fiasco.
The project, initially slated to open in 2020, has faced a series of setbacks, leaving residents and businesses in limbo. Despite construction beginning in 2011, the line remains unfinished, and the current government is facing increasing pressure to deliver results.
But here's where it gets controversial... Premier Doug Ford has suggested a potential opening in 2026, but with a history of broken promises and technical issues, many are skeptical. Provincial Liberal legislator Adil Shamji argues that Ford's government cannot claim victory without addressing the project's colossal failures.
Shamji demands a public inquiry to investigate the mismanagement and delays, seeking compensation for affected businesses and assurances that similar issues won't plague future transit projects. He believes this is crucial for restoring public confidence in the transit system.
And this is the part most people miss... the current government isn't solely to blame. Both the Progressive Conservatives and the previous Liberal government have overseen this project during its long and troubled construction phase.
The province's spokesperson, Dakota Brasier, points to the substantial completion of the project, claiming it was achieved after years of neglect and delays by the previous government. However, this doesn't address the ongoing concerns and the need for transparency.
Toronto city councillor Josh Matlow has also called for a public inquiry, highlighting the impact of construction delays on businesses and communities, particularly in Little Jamaica.
With final testing completed in December, there's a glimmer of hope for an opening soon. But will it be smooth sailing, or will the Eglinton Crosstown echo the troubled launch of the Finch West LRT?
