A veteran cyclist's ambition never wanes, even as the years tick by. Nairo Quintana, a name synonymous with cycling prowess, is a prime example of this enduring spirit. Despite nearing the twilight of his career, Quintana's competitive fire remains unwavering.
On Monday, at the Tour of Oman, Quintana came tantalizingly close to his first race victory in four years. Attacking with precision on the final climb of stage 3, he almost secured the win, only to be caught within sight of the finish line, a mere 300 meters away.
But here's where it gets controversial... Quintana, now in his third season with Movistar, is still aiming for the top spots. Currently ranked in the top 10 of the General Classification (GC), he has his eyes set on the final stage, a grueling 6km climb up Green Mountain with a steep gradient of 10%.
In a recent interview, Quintana shared his strategy and ambitions. "Try to always be at the front with Diego Pescador to try and win the overall with him," he said. But his sights aren't solely set on the Tour of Oman. Quintana also expressed his desire to race in the Vuelta a España this year, a competition he holds in high regard.
"I really like the Vuelta a España; it's a fantastic stage race, and I've always performed well during the summer months. But if the team decides to send me to the Giro d'Italia, I'm ready for that challenge too," he added.
Quintana's team, Movistar, is also looking to reclaim its glory days. Their objective is clear: to win the big races once more. With young riders like Iván Romeo, Carlos Canal, and now Diego Pescador taking their first steps into the professional cycling world, the team is focused on both the present and the future.
And this is the part most people miss... Age is just a number when it comes to ambition and determination. Quintana's story is a testament to the fact that experience and wisdom can be powerful tools in the world of sports.
So, what do you think? Is Quintana's ambition still justified, or is he chasing a dream that might be beyond his reach? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
