John Cena's Taiwan Controversy Almost Got Him Fired from Peacemaker by James Gunn (2026)

John Cena's revelation: A career crossroads and the shadow of potential cancellation. The wrestling icon, poised to retire from WWE, recently shared a startling experience that could have cost him his role in the Peacemaker series. This is a story about navigating the complexities of international relations and the unexpected fallout from a simple misunderstanding.

For those unfamiliar, John Cena is set to have his final WWE match next weekend at Saturday Night's Main Event. With his wrestling career winding down, Cena is shifting his focus entirely to Hollywood, particularly within the DC Universe, where James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has big plans for Cena's Peacemaker character.

Cena's recent interview with Joe Rogan delved into a 2021 controversy that could have changed everything. It all began with a comment that inadvertently touched upon the sensitive issue of Taiwan's status.

Cena, with his decade of Mandarin studies and experience filming in China, explained his intention to connect with a broader audience. He shared that he had committed to doing a significant portion of his media appearances in Mandarin. But here's where it gets controversial... During the filming of a promotional video, a line in Mandarin referred to Taiwan as a country. Cena, reading from the prompt, inadvertently triggered a significant backlash.

The reaction from China was swift, leading Cena to issue an apology. However, as he now acknowledges, "In apologising to China, I pissed off my home country." He was caught in the crossfire, facing criticism from all sides.

And this is the part most people miss... Cena believed his role in Peacemaker Season 1 was at risk. He immediately approached James Gunn, offering his resignation if necessary. Fortunately, Gunn stood by him. Cena, however, has since decided to avoid speaking Mandarin during press tours to prevent further misunderstandings.

Peacemaker Season 2 concluded with Chris Smith in a multiversal prison. While the character is expected to return in Man of Tomorrow, Gunn currently has no plans for a third season of Peacemaker.
