A bold move by Israel's security cabinet has sparked controversy and raised international concerns. In a recent development, the government has given the green light to 19 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, intensifying its settlement expansion campaign.
This decision, led by Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a settler himself, alongside Defence Minister Israel Katz, is a direct challenge to the establishment of a Palestinian state. Smotrich boldly stated that this move aims to block any such possibility.
But here's where it gets controversial: international law considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal. Despite this, the current Israeli government, in power since 2022, has significantly ramped up the approval of new settlements and even begun legalizing unauthorized outposts, rebranding them as 'neighborhoods' of existing settlements.
The recent approvals bring the total number of settlements sanctioned over the past three years to a staggering 69, according to Smotrich. This comes just days after the United Nations reported that settlement expansion has reached its highest level since 2017.
Among the latest approvals is the re-establishment of two settlements, Ganim and Kadim, which were dismantled nearly two decades ago. In May, Israel approved an even more ambitious plan - 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, marking the biggest expansion in decades.
In August, the Israeli government also approved the construction of over 3,000 homes in the E1 project area between Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement. This project, previously frozen due to international opposition, has now been revived, with Smotrich declaring that it will 'bury the idea of a Palestinian state'.
Approximately 700,000 settlers currently reside in around 160 settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, according to the Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now. This land is precisely what the Palestinians seek for their future independent state.
The settlement expansion has not only angered Arab nations, who consistently voice their opposition, but it has also fueled fears of a possible annexation of the occupied West Bank. US President Donald Trump had issued a stern warning to Israel about such a move, stating that it would result in the loss of all US support.
In September, the UK, along with several other countries including Australia and Canada, recognized a Palestinian state. This symbolic yet significant policy change was met with opposition from Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring that a Palestinian state 'will not happen'.
The situation remains tense, with violence in the occupied West Bank escalating since the war in Gaza began in October 2023. The settlement expansion further entrenches Israel's occupation and undermines the prospects of a two-state solution, heightening fears and sparking debates about the future of this region.
