In an impressive display of skill, Tomas Hertl achieved a personal best by scoring five points—comprising two goals and three assists—during the Vegas Golden Knights’ commanding 7-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Sunday.
"It’s hard to explain. Some days you feel great but end up with just one point or none at all," Hertl remarked modestly. "Then there are nights like this where everything seems to go right. I'm simply pleased with how I played."
Jack Eichel also made headlines by netting two goals, while Pavel Dorofeyev added a goal along with two assists. Mark Stone contributed significantly as well, racking up three assists for the Golden Knights, who now boast an impressive winning streak of four games, including a 4-2 triumph against the St. Louis Blues the previous day. Goalie Carl Lindbom was solid between the pipes, recording 18 saves throughout the match.
"We’ve been stringing together some wins, and I think the players recognized that as we entered the second half of the season, our current position wasn’t satisfactory," said Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy. "We recently discussed the positives we've achieved with different players coming in and out of the lineup. They are beginning to take ownership of their performance."
For the Sharks, Collin Graf and Alexander Wennberg found the back of the net, but their team, which had enjoyed a three-game winning streak prior to this matchup, faced a tough challenge. They previously secured a thrilling 5-4 overtime win against the Dallas Stars. Goaltender Yaroslav Askarov made 26 saves in this contest.
Notably, Macklin Celebrini's remarkable scoring streak came to an end at 13 games, during which he accumulated nine goals and 18 assists.
"If you look at their roster, they’re big, agile, and play with a structured style. This is a seasoned team that knows what it takes to win," noted Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky, acknowledging the strength of the Golden Knights.
Eichel opened the scoring for Vegas at 7:19 in the first period. After Ivan Barbashev retrieved the puck from behind the net and delivered a backhand pass, Eichel managed to score after his initial shot was saved by Askarov, poking in his own rebound at the left post.
Graf quickly equalized for San Jose at 9:33. After Zach Whitecloud attempted to clear the puck, it fortuitously landed on Graf’s stick, allowing him to execute a shot that slipped through the five-hole, potentially deflecting off defenseman Noah Hanifin.
"We just got the puck deep, creating a turnover opportunity," Sharks forward Michael Misa commented, reflecting on Graf’s goal. "He was in the right place at the right time and finished beautifully."
Dorofeyev restored the lead for the Golden Knights with a power-play goal at 10:57. Hertl provided a clever touch pass directly in front of the net, enabling Dorofeyev to lift the puck over Askarov near the right post.
Eichel added his second goal of the evening at 4:19 in the second period, increasing the lead to 3-1. He scored from the left circle, beating Askarov with a shot that went under the goalie’s glove after Stone forced a turnover along the boards.
Hertl extended the lead further to 4-1 with another power-play goal at 11:00. Following a shot from Dorofeyev that struck Timothy Liljegren, Hertl pounced on the loose puck and swept it into an open net.
"The power play is crucial for us. Winning face-offs and scoring in front of the net is key," Cassidy explained. "I’m sure [Hertl] enjoys playing here; he likely has fond memories from his past visits. Sometimes returning to a familiar arena brings a unique energy."
Whitecloud then blasted a one-timer from the right point that beat Askarov through traffic, pushing the score to 5-1 at 12:25.
Wennberg narrowed the deficit to 5-2 at 16:29 when he received a pass from Liljegren and executed a powerful shot from the right circle.
"I believe we had chances to score," Wennberg reflected. "When you create those opportunities, it’s essential to convert them into goals that can change the game."
Shea Theodore later sealed the game with an empty-net goal at 17:03 of the third period, extending the Golden Knights’ lead to 6-2. Hertl capped off the night by scoring his second goal with a one-timer from the right circle at 18:59, finalizing the score at 7-2.
"I felt we played a very strong game overall," Lindbom stated. "Our offense and defense were solid, and the power play was effective. Overall, it was a great performance."
In summary, Stone extended his scoring streak to eight games with seven goals and five assists, while Eichel pushed his point streak to five games with four goals and three assists.
