A truly independent and fair media landscape serves as a robust ally to democracy rather than posing any threat to it. This was strongly emphasized by Shamima Muslim, the Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, who reiterated President John Dramani Mahama’s dedication to upholding press freedom in Ghana.
During the 3rd Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Dinner held on December 22, 2025, she stated, "As a committed member of the GJA, President Mahama firmly believes that a fair and independent media is essential for the survival and strength of our democratic institutions."
This assertion highlights the vital role that media plays in a functioning democracy. In her address, Shamima Muslim urged journalists to prioritize responsibility and accuracy in their reporting, particularly in this digital age where misinformation and fake news can spread rapidly and have damaging effects on public perception.
"Freedom should always walk hand in hand with responsibility," she remarked. "In our current digital landscape, we are increasingly facing the widespread issue of fake news, misinformation, and intentional disinformation, all of which can significantly undermine public trust in institutions and disrupt national unity."
Muslim appealed to journalists, stakeholders, and partners to join forces in combating these challenges, emphasizing that the government cannot tackle this issue alone.
She further noted that President Mahama encourages the media to focus on delivering coverage that is both accurate and comprehensive while also wishing them safety during the festive season.
"The President urges that media professionals approach their work with caution, precision, and depth, steering clear of misrepresentation, speculation, or selective narratives that could mislead the public or exacerbate tensions unnecessarily."
Despite President Mahama's efforts to enhance press freedom, challenges remain, including incidents of violence against journalists and concerns regarding the nation's declining press freedom ratings.
