A potential bombshell transfer offer could shake up the Premier League promotion race, and it involves one of Coventry City's star players, Haji Wright.
Coventry, under the guidance of Frank Lampard, has been on a remarkable journey this season, topping the Championship table and eyeing an end to their long absence from the Premier League. But here's where it gets controversial: Turkish Super Lig giants Besiktas have set their sights on Wright, a key figure in Coventry's success.
Besiktas, currently languishing in fifth place, 13 points behind rivals Galatasaray, are looking to bolster their attack with the USA forward. Tammy Abraham, their top scorer with seven league goals, might soon be joined by Wright, who has a proven track record in the Super Lig with Antalyaspor, where he netted an impressive 29 goals in just 60 appearances.
Coventry's decision to sign Wright for a club-record €9 million back in 2023 as a replacement for Viktor Gyokeres has paid dividends. European football expert Andy Brassell believes Coventry should hold onto Wright, questioning the logic of selling him now.
"Unless Coventry has an extraordinary replacement lined up, a complete surprise package, why would they let go of Wright?" Brassell asks.
From Wright's perspective, the allure of a Premier League return with Coventry is undeniable. While Besiktas offers a significant wage increase, Brassell argues that the club's volatile state, lacking European football and facing fan discontent, might not be as appealing.
"Wright is on the cusp of Premier League football. The wage increase at Besiktas is tempting, but otherwise, it's hard to see the appeal. They don't have European football this season, and the club is in a tricky spot with unhappy fans."
Coventry's recent form has dipped, winning only one of their last four games. They'll aim to turn things around when they face Swansea City on Friday.
And this is the part most people miss: Wright's decision to stay or go could be pivotal in Coventry's promotion push. Will he stay and help Coventry achieve their Premier League dream, or will the lure of Besiktas prove too strong?
