'Behind The Palm Trees' is a genre-bending masterpiece that blends social commentary and historical reflection. It fearlessly explores the aftermath of colonialism and the complexities of relationships in a conservative society.
Set in the vibrant city of Tangier, the story revolves around a young Moroccan man, played by Driss Ramdi, who finds himself caught between two women. His longtime fiancé, portrayed by Nadia Kounda, and a wealthy French girl, played by Sara Giraudeau, represent two contrasting worlds. As he becomes entangled in the glamorous lifestyle of the French girl, he begins to neglect his local girlfriend, unaware of the consequences that await him.
The film boasts an impressive cast, including renowned French actress Carole Bouquet and Olivier Rabourdin. It is a collaborative effort between French, Moroccan, Belgian, and Qatari production houses, bringing together an exceptional group of talents from the Arab world and European independent cinema.
Benm'Barek, a talented director with a unique vision, co-wrote the screenplay with Fyzal Boulifa, a BAFTA and BIFA-nominated director. The film also features the writing talents of Emma Benestan and Agnès Feuvre.
The production team includes Jean Bréhat and Emma Binet as producers, Son Doan as cinematographer, and Christel Dewynter as editor. The film received support from prestigious institutions such as the Doha Film Institute, Atlas Workshops, and the Red Sea Souk, where it was awarded the coveted Distribution Prize by MAD Solutions.
"Behind The Palm Trees" is a testament to the power of love and passion, transcending borders and cultures. Alaa Karkouti and Maher Diab, co-founders of Mad Solutions, describe it as "an authentic Arab story with global appeal."
Benm'Barek, born in Rabat and raised between Morocco, France, and Belgium, shares her inspiration for the film: "Tangier, with its contrasts, was the perfect setting for this intimate thriller where romantic tensions escalate into dangerous forces."
Her previous work, 'Sofia' (2018), received critical acclaim, winning the Best Screenplay Award at Cannes and numerous other international accolades.
International sales are handled by Pyramide International, ensuring the film's reach extends far beyond the MENA region.
