Why So Many Singaporeans Visit Bangkok Yearly — And How I Finally Joined Them
Bangkok — I'm thrilled to say I've finally ventured beyond my comfort zone and explored the vibrant city of Bangkok, Thailand. As someone who had never set foot in this bustling metropolis, I was eager to uncover the allure that draws so many Singaporeans to its vibrant streets annually.
Bangkok, a sensory extravaganza, is a far cry from the serene, rule-abiding Singapore I'm accustomed to. The city's vibrant energy, from its bright lights to the aromatic street food and lively music, offers an immersive experience like no other. I was curious to see how this chaotic yet captivating city would captivate me.
The Allure of Bangkok
Bangkok, a food and shopping paradise, is a top travel destination for Singaporeans. With over 680,000 visitors from January to September alone (as per Straitstimes.com), it's clear why this city is so enticing. Despite my previous lack of interest, I was determined to explore its vibrant culture and unique attractions.
A City of Contrasts
Bangkok's charm lies in its contrast. The Supachalasai National Stadium, hosting the athletics competition, is nestled near the former shopping hub MBK Centre. Meanwhile, shopaholics flock to the Red Building Vintage in Chatuchak, Bang Sue Junction, and trendy night markets. This city caters to all tastes, offering a diverse range of experiences.
Legalization of Marijuana
Thailand's legalization of marijuana in 2022, allowing its consumption in food and drinks, adds a unique twist to the city's allure. I was intrigued by the presence of 7-Eleven-like shops selling marijuana, a stark contrast to the strict regulations in my home country, Singapore.
Traffic and Sensory Overload
Bangkok's legendary traffic jams were a concern, but I braved the roads during the Shanti Pereira's 100m sprint event. The journey to the Suphachalasai stadium, just 4km away, took an astonishing 90 minutes, with my driver taking a nap while stuck in traffic. Thankfully, I avoided any Thai tattoos, a common souvenir for those caught in Bangkok's chaotic streets.
Culinary Delights
Bangkok's culinary scene is a foodie's paradise. I indulged in steamed fish, crab fried rice, and pad kra pow, a minced meat stir-fry with Thai holy basil. The city's spicy cuisine, known as 'Thai spicy', is a unique experience, and I learned to trust my instincts over local recommendations.
Relaxation and Bliss
To unwind, I treated myself to a full-body massage, a blissful experience after a day of exploration. Bangkok's ability to offer both excitement and relaxation is a significant draw.
The Warmth of Thai People
What truly captivated me was the warmth of the Thai people and their passion for sports. Their unwavering support for athletes, cheering and singing regardless of the outcome, is a heartwarming aspect of Thai culture. Perhaps, this is something we can learn from and emulate back home.
Converting Skeptics
Initially skeptical, I returned home as a convert. Bangkok's vibrant energy, delicious cuisine, and welcoming people have left an indelible mark on me. I'm already planning my next visit, eager to explore more of this captivating city and immerse myself in its unique culture.
