The device, a $8,000 SmartDrive, which powers her wheelchair, was accidentally left in a Toronto Lyft driver's car in October. Despite numerous attempts to contact the driver, including involving Lyft and the Toronto Police, the driver refused to return the device. The 55-year-old woman has been virtually housebound for months due to the lack of the motorized assistive device, which helps her navigate hills and uneven terrain. The driver eventually sent the device by FedEx to Berg's son in Toronto, but he couldn't explain why he kept the device for so long. Lyft decommissioned the driver, calling the behavior 'unacceptable'. The company provided a prepaid FedEx label for the return, but the driver stopped returning calls. Berg's son, Magnus, called the Toronto Police Service in December, but the driver still hasn't returned the device. Magnus wants policies changed so companies have more power to force drivers to cooperate when a rider's belongings go missing, emphasizing the importance of vital medical equipment.
